In addition, IIT Bombay has 13 student hostels with about 2,200 undergraduate and 2,000 postgraduate students.

IIT Madras
It is located in the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
It was established in 1959 with technical assistance from the Government of West Germany and has nearly 360 faculty and approximately 2,500 undergraduate and 2,000 postgraduate students.
The campus is spread over an area of about 2.5 square kilometres (620 acres), and has 16 academic departments, nearly 100 laboratories, and 17 hostels.
As with IIT Bombay, it retains its original name despite a change in the name of its city.

IIT Delhi
1961, IIT Delhi was given the current name and declared an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963".
It is located in Hauz Khas and has an area of 1.3 square kilometres (320 acres).
It has 11 hostels and 26 departments, centres and schools. It has 426 faculty members and approximately 2,200 undergraduate and 1,600 postgraduate students.

IIT Guwahati
was established in 1994 near the city of Guwahati on the northern banks of the Brahmaputra River.
The sprawling 2.85 square kilometres campus attracts many visitors because of its scenic beauty.
There are approximately 1,300 undergraduate and 500 postgraduate students in 14 departments, which have a total of 152 faculty .

IIT Roorkee
originally known as the University of Roorkee, was established in 1847 as the first engineering college of the British Empire.
[12] Located in Uttarakhand, the college was renamed The Thomson College of Civil Engineering in 1854.
It became first technical university of India in 1949 and was renamed "University of Roorkee".
The University of Roorkee was included in the IIT system in 2001 as IIT Roorkee.
It runs eleven Under Graduate, five Integrated Dual Degree, three Integrated M.Tech., three Integrated M.Sc., 61 Post Graduate and several Doctoral Programmes.

IIT Bhubaneswar
Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar is the first amongst the eight new IITs to become operational.
The Institute with 40 students each in the disciplines of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering started running from its mentor institute campus at IIT Kharagpur from 23 July, 2008.
The temporary campus for IIT Bhubaneswar is being developed by augmenting the facilities available at IIT Kharagpur Bhubaneswar Extension Campus.
Faculty recruitment, creation of laboratories and other support facilities are in full swing.
The Institute will operate from the temporary campus at Bhubaneswar from the coming academic session i.e. July 2009.

IIT Hyderabad
IIT Hyderabad is part of history in the making.

In January 2009, IIT Hyderabad admitted 11 PhD students. On February, 27, 2009, the foundation stone of IIT Hyderabad was laid by Smt.
Sonia Gandhi, Hon'ble Chairperson of UPA. For the 2009-10 academic year, IITH will be admitting 120 B.Tech.students, 35 M.Tech. students and 10-15 Ph.D. students.

IIT Patna
Indian Institute of Technology Patna, Patna is one of the new IITs established by an act of parliament on August 06, 2008.
It runs from its transit campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna.
It has three schools that host seven academic departments namely, School of Engineering (Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering), School of Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics) and School of Humanities and Social Science (Humanities and Social Science).

IIT Mandi
The laying of the foundation stone at Kamand, the site for the permanent campus of IIT Mandi, took place on 24th February 2009.
The IIT Mandi Cell was set up at the IIT Roorkee on 18th March 2009, to steer the activities of the IIT Mandi .
A Preliminary Project Report ( PPR ) outlining a road map of 10 years for development of academic program, campus development and related issues was finalized initially on 25.4.2009.
A major component of the report was development of a scaled drawing of the 538 Acres of land at Kamand and its land-use-plan. The report was submitted to Govt. of H.P. in April 2009.
The IIT Mandi was registered as a society in Uttarakhand, on 20th June The admission of the First batch of students of IIT Mandi took place in July 2009 and their classes were conducted from 27th July 2009, onwards. Staying arrangement for IIT Mandi students was made in student hostels, Rajendra Bhawan (Boys) and Kasturba Bhawan (Girls).

IIT (BHU) Varanasi
CONVERSION OF IT-BHU INTO IIT (BHU), Varanasi HAS BEEN PASSED BY LOK SABHA ON MARCH 24, 2011.
The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2011, has been ALREADY TABLED IN RAJYASABHA FOR CONSIDERATION AND PASSING .
It is built-in in the Amendment Bill that the students admitted in 2006-07 session and thereafter, and graduating in 2009-10 and thereafter, will be awarded the IIT Degree; provided that such candidates have not been awarded the degree.
BHU has kindly agreed and consequentially postponed the conferment of the degree by deferring the convocation of IT-BHU for the 2009-10 session, to benefit such students.
